Tips On What to Wear

Here are a few tips on what I think looks great for a photo session.
  • Keep it Simple. This is very important to remember. You do not want your outfit to be so busy that the viewers attention stays on your clothes. Keep in mind you want to bring attention to your face and not only on what you are wearing.
  • Layering is a great option. It helps keep a busy shirt/blouse under control. As you can see in the above picture the layering of the jacket helps the viewers eye go up to the face. Layering is definitely optional but adds a great touch.
  • If your photography session is going to be outside I think earth tones look great. You can also choose your color choice by matching it to the season or setting. In the above picture there is a lot of warm tones so the choice of this mustard yellow looks great.

  • Mix and Match: Patterns and solids work well together. Sometimes a bold pattern can make the pictures look very busy, especially if the background/setting of the picture is also busy. Adding a solid jacket, cardigan, etc is a great fix. Mix and Match also works with the subjects in the picture. A lot of times when there is more than one person being photographed they coordinate their outfits to match to a T. There is nothing wrong with this but by adding different patterns and colors that go well together can balance and unify your photo.
  • Accessorize is a fun option. Adding accessories is a fun way to add a pop of color or an attention grabber. Adding earrings, necklaces, scarves, bracelets, hats, etc can really make a plain outfit go bold and fabulous. Be cautious as to not add too much. If the subject goes with a neutral color scheme it would be a great idea to bring in color with some accessories. Example: a chunky blue necklace against a white Tee would look great with a blue sky or a water setting.

  • Remember: Opposites Attract. Complementary Colors look great together.
  • Example: Orange and Blue
  • Yellow and Violet
  • Red and Green (I don't like red and green outfits together but in the above picture the subject is wearing a red shirt and green trees are in the background).
